How Much Will Drywall Cost?
Drywall instillation can range in price depending on the type of board used, who the installer is, and what it takes to prep the surfaces.
Drywall types can range from size to density of board and each has its own costs and best use cases.
The first step to deciding the cost of drywalling is to determine the board footage. The second thing I would look at is if it’s something you can manage or if you need a professional drywall company. The third step is to determine what type of board you require for each part of the project.
Determining Board Footage
The easiest way to get the board footage is to first measure the lengths of all the walls in a room. For example if its a simple square room and the walls are 10’, 10’, 10’, 10’ then you would add that together to get 40.
Then you take that number and multiply that by the height of the wall. The equation would look like (L1+L2+L3+L4)x H = SF or for our room (10+10+10+10)x8= 320.
Now for determining the ceiling you would take the walls adjacent to each other to get your area 10x10 =100. take those 2 numbers and thats the board foot. so for a 10 x 10 room you’re looking at 420 sq ft of drywall.
If you were using 10 foot boards you can quickly take the sq ft of the board 40 and divide that into the total 420/40 = # of Boards. In this example it would take exactly 11 boards to drywall the room. Obviously this is the simplest example possible and most rooms aren’t square but if you add a couple sheets onto every job for waste you’ll have a cleaner end result with tight buts and flats.
Do I Need To Hire Someone?
You need to take a good step back and think about if you know how to do drywall properly. You need to make sure once you start you have a system for knowing where outlets and light boxes are. Once its covered you will need to take sheets down to find them.
Hiring a local experienced drywall team might be your best choice especially if you have never done drywall before. They will be able to identify obstructions and recommend the right drywall and board count.
A professional drywall team will be able to get tighter joints which will prevent cracking in the future. We believe its worth getting it done right.
What Type Of Board?
Your best bet is to have a drywall expert distinguish if you’ll need ceiling board, 5/8” drywall, mould resistant board, Dense Shield and more. They will know the lengths of screws needed and where to put backing as well.
We always recommend putting blue or green board in the bathrooms because they’re mould resistant. We use 1/2” drywall on most of the walls because its more cost effective.
So How Much Total
The way to figure out this is to do your board count get the total and multiply that by the cost. lets say drywall costs 20 a sheet then that room would be $220 worth of drywall. Most companies will charge anywhere between $1 and $2 per sq ft. and once you count for variants in price you will have the exact number.
